Movie Stars!

This week we have been using our computing skills to create movie trailers.

We had to think about our script, learn about different ranges and how to edit.

We had so much fun using imovie and some of us have even used our newly learnt skills to create our own home movies.

Here are some that we created in school. We hope you enjoy them.

Qatar Artwork

This week we have been discussing the different landscapes we have come across when travelling throughout Qatar. We then decided to paint a landscape of a dhow boat travelling in the sea with West Bay in the background. We carefully chose the colours that we wanted to use and used blending techniques to create an ombre effect. We are very proud of our paintings!

Financial Literacy.

This week in Maths we have been learning about 'Financial Literacy.'

Why teach personal finance education?

All children are entitled to learn the attitudes, skills, and knowledge that will prepare them for the economic reality of their lives now and in the future. Recent research has revealed that children are dealing with money matters at an early age. (Research is England based, and some aspects may not be relevant or true in Qatar)
• Children as young as seven will offer to do chores to boost their spending power. By comparison, most parents didn’t work for money until they were ten.

• The average eight year old already has a mobile phone.

• By the time they are ten, children are likely to be shopping online using their parents’ credit or debit cards.

• Children now have greater spending power than ever before, with average weekly pocket money totalling £6.32, compared with £3.77 for their parents and £2.38 for grandparents in the equivalent of today’s money.

The evidence is clear. Children, like adults, are faced with a host of choices about money. Personal finance education aims to provide children with the ability to make sound decisions in their everyday lives, and to grow into adults who know how to keep track of their finances, plan ahead, spend wisely and confidently negotiate the world of finance.

In Year 5 we have focussed on Budgeting skills; how to budget for a day out, how to budget for school resources and how to balance income and spending. Many understood that ideally spending should not be more than income.

Here we are tackling our learning; the children had to show many attributes of the DBS Learner Profile for these challenges.

Native American Symbols.

A fitting ending to our Amazing Americas topic was to discover all about the language of symbols.

The children had asked about what the symbols meant and were excited to get the opportunity to create some artistic stories using Native American symbols.

Here they are in action.

Can you find out about other symbols used throughout history?

Terracotta Warriors at the Museum of Islamic Arts.

Leopards and Hedgehogs were very lucky to be the first year group from DBS Wakra to visit the famous Terracotta Warriors currently on Display in Qatar's MIA.

We were shown around the exhibits and were told the story of the Funerary Army.

We were so intrigued by the figures and had so many questions that the museum staff answered for us.

"What I found most interesting is that there were 8000 unique statues, that must have taken so long to make!" said Rafay. He continued "How did so many statues just get forgotten about? How could they ever get lost?"

After hearing all about the history of these impressive figures, we went down into the MIA's workshops and used some Terracotta Clay to make our warriors.

It was brilliant fun, and all our statues looked unique as well. Using the clay tools was hard work, and we had to be so careful to get the details right.

Here we are with some of our creations and enjoying getting hands on with the clay.

If you would like to find out more about the Terracotta Warriors, visit this website
Or pay a visit to the exhibition at the Museum of Islamic Arts.

Computing- Making our own games.

We are game developers. This is the title of our new unit of learning in computing. During this unit, we will be designing and developing an interactive game using the program 'Scratch.'

We came up with many simple ideas to give our game a theme and designed them out of the computer suite. However, this week we took our ideas to the computers and started creating and sourcing assets for our games. These assets include backgrounds and sprites (characters) we had to create our backgrounds, design several sprites with different looks or outfits for different stages of our games.

After that, we started to give our sprites some simple commands using the coding scripts. We are in for a challenge, but as a link to our DBS learner profile, we are will to take risks and give things a go.

Here we are in action.

Good example of how we are caring by helping each other if we get stuck.

Progress with a background design.

Swimming World Cup

This week Year 5 were very lucky to go on a trip to watch the Swimming World Cup. We had a fantastic day cheering on all of the different countries. After the swimming we spent some time in Aspire park where we had a picnic lunch and played with our friends. We had a fantastic day!

This week Year 5 have started to look at the UK money system. We have been finding out about pounds (£) and pence (p) and have been thinking about what different coins and notes we could use to make different amounts of money. We were also excited to look at and work with real UK coins! Here are some pictures of some of the activities we have been doing.

North American Landscapes

This week we have been researching North American landscapes where we have found out lots of interesting geographical information about the Caribbean, Death Valley and the Everglades. We have also been comparing these areas to Qatar and have been surprised to find a number of similarities!

We have now started to paint beautiful landscapes of these areas and are thinking very carefully about our use of colour, texture and tone to give our paintings more depth and accuracy.

What do you think of our paintings so far?

Causal Connectives.

This week we have been learning about explanation texts as part of this we learnt about causal connectives.

We had two parts of a sentence and a variety of causal connectives; we worked in pairs to see which sentences had the most impact on a reader. Some of the causal connectives we very challenging to place in the sentences but being good risk-takers, we managed and will now try to use some of these in our independent writing.

Place Value.

This week we have been learning about place value.

We have been building on our prior knowledge and increasing our skills to 5 digit numbers, knowing what each digit is worth depending on where it is in the number.

There was a lot of maths skills that came into this task. We have to pick single digit numbers and think about the possibility of a larger or smaller number coming next. Using the information we decided where the number we selected should go to make the largest possible five digit number. We then swapped the numbers around to make the smallest number, compared them and plotted the two numbers on a number line! A great deal to think about but we did a fantastic job and gave wonderful explanations as to why the numbers had changed.

Restaurant Team Challenge.

As part of our 'icebreakers' activities this week we all took part in a restaurant challenge.

We had to work as a team to create a brand new restaurant!

We planned:

A name, a theme, a menu, a flyer to advertise the launch, a birds-eye view of the restaurant layout, an advert for employing staff and anything else we thought might be useful to make our restaurant a success.

We then presented to the other restaurateurs, and we voted for which one we thought would be the most successful.

Here are some pictures of our challenge.

And here we are presenting our ideas.

We enjoyed this challenge and all but one team created Italian restaurants!
